Downloading Problems FAQ

When I download the program or history installers they are downloaded as a .EFW file not an .EXE file. I cannot run .EFW files. How do I fix this?

You are probably have CA Internet Security Suite 2007 or VET Internet Security Suite 2007 installed on your PC. The firewall software included in this suite automatically renames .EXE files to .EFW files rendering them un-runnable, as a means to make sure you don't accidentally run a file on the off chance it contains a virus. In Norgate's opinion this goes a little too far. There are three solutions:

  1. Temporarily disable the firewall - right click on the Security Center icon in your system tray as shown below:

Click CA Personal Firewall then click Disable CA Personal Firewall

Once you have completed the installation, please re-enable the firewall again.

  2. Rename the file extension - If it’s supposed to be a .exe file just rename it to .exe from .efw and you’re good to go. Repeat for all .EXE files you attempted to download. If you cannot see the extensions, you may need to click Tools -> Folder Options on any windows explorer window, then go to the View tab and scrolll down and look for "hide extensions for known file types". Ensure this is unticked. You can then edit the filename extension.

  3. Uninstall CA Interenet Security Suite and find a suitable alternative that doesn't mess with standard file extensions without informing you when it does so.
